Born in 1964 in Castlecomer, Kilkenny, Ireland, Maurice Shortall C.S.Sp., entered the Spiritans in Ireland after attending Rockwell Catering College in 1982. After completing his novitiate, Maurice did his philosophical studies with the Jesuits in Milltown Park, and his theology in Kimmage Manor Institute, Dublin. Maurice went to The Gambia for two years as part of his missionary training where he worked in St Peter’s High School, Lamin, and in Basse. He made his final profession in the Congregation in Kimmage Manor on the 2nd of October 1990 and was ordained in June 1991. Before taking up his mission appointment in Brazil, he did an STL in moral theology in the Accademia Alfonsiana, Rome.
In Brazil, Maurice worked in pastoral ministry on the periphery of the city of São Paulo as part of the Irish Spiritan team and as coordinator of the pastoral sector of São Mateus in the Archdiocese of São Paulo. After completing studies in psychology in Santa Clara University, CA, USA, he returned to Brazil in 2009 as director of the Spiritan theologate of UCAL in São Paulo. In 2010 he was also elected District leader of Brazil Southwest and in 2011 he was chosen as coordinator of UCAL.
