The basic work of Claude Poullart des Places was that of the "Poor Scholars". He certainly showed a great concern for the material and spiritual poverty of these young clerics who were too poor to pay their way through the seminary; but it is also true that in devoting his life to them, his primary aim was to come to the aid, through them, of abandoned souls. Amongst these "abandoned souls", the founder certainly included pagans.

L’œuvre essentielle de Claude-François Poullart des Places fut celle des Pauvres Écoliers. Certes il ressentait très vivement la détresse, tant matérielle que spirituelle, de ces jeunes clercs trop pauvres pour payer pension dans un séminaire, mais il n’en est pas moins vrai qu’en leur consacrant sa vie, il ambitionnait avant tout de venir, par leur intermédiaire, au secours des âmes abandonnées. De ces âmes abandonnées, les païens, dans la pensée du fondateur, étaient loin d’être exclus.

A obra essencial de Cláudio Francisco Poullart des Places foi a dos estudantes pobres. Certamente ele sentia muito vivamente o infortúnio, tanto material como espiritual, destes jovens clérigos muito pobres para pagar a pensão num seminário, mas não é menos verdade que consagrando-lhes a sua vida, ambicionava antes de tudo vir, por seu intermédio, em socorro das almas abandonadas. Destas almas abandonadas, os pagãos, no pensamento do fundador, estavam longe de ser excluídos.
