Bede Ukwuije, CSSp is the 1st Assistant to the Superior General of Spiritans. He belongs to the Province of Nigeria South-East. He was born on 29th August 1967 at Aba, Nigeria. He made his final vows on 30th August 1992 at Awo-Omamma. After his initial studies in philsophy and theology at the Spiritan School of Philosophy, Isienu Nsukka and the Faculté Jésuites du Centre Sèvres, Paris, he was ordained priest on 31st July 1994.
He became a missionary in France for 12 years, serving as Students’ Chaplain at the University of Rennes, Chaplain of African Migrants’ Community in the Dioceses of Rennes and Nanterre, Associate Priest at St Thérèse d’Avilla Parish, Chatenay-Malabry and Formator at the Spiritan Formation Community in Clamart.
He returned to Nigeria in 2005 and worked for 7 years as Director of Formation at the Spiritan International School of Theology, Attakwu-Enugu(SIST), and Lecturer in Systematic Theology both at SIST and the Institut Catholique de Paris. He was also 2nd Assistant Provincial in Nigeria-SE from 2010-2012.
He holds a Doctorate in Theology(ThD) from the Institut Catholique de Paris and a PhD in Theology and Religious Studies from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. In 2013 he was promoted to the rank of Full Professor of Theology by the SIST Governing Council. He is a member of the Theological Commission of the Union of Superiors General, Rome.
